Cambridge Varsity Softball Hitting Big On the Road

Cambridge Varsity Softball Hitting Big On the Road

Cambridge Bears vs. Sprayberry  August 26

The Lady Bears took to the road in a region game against Sprayberry on Tuesday, August 26. The team had an outstanding start, scoring 7 runs in the first 2 innings with hits from Lily Valeo, Keara Napoli, Courtney Campbell, Abigail Wilson, and Diggy Dixon. The Yellow Jackets were able to get on the board on an error in the second inning and scored twice.  Failing to ever give up, Sprayberry notched 3 more runs in the 6th and went on to tie the game in the 7th inning at 7-7.

This game became a real nail biter as the Lady Bears would head into an International Tie Breaker.  According to the rules, a runner starts out on second base.  Keara Napoli hit a single and moved the runner to 3rd.  So with runners at 1st and 3rd, #15 Courtney Campbell stepped up to the plate.  On an 0-2 pitch, she blasted one out of the park to put the Bears up, 10-7.  It was an incredible shot at the just the right moment.  Coach Chip Flemmer: "Courtney Campbell's 3-run homerun against Sprayberry was a huge lift!  We had given up a 7-run lead, and our energy was just gone until the homerun as well as a phenomenal diving catch by right fielder and freshmen Jensen Cheshire."  The Lady Bears would head to the bottom of the 8th with solid defense and held on to win by a final score of 10-8.

Cambridge Bears Vs. Peachtree Ridge
 August 27

The Lady Bears were away once again Wednesday to take on the Lions of Peachtree Ridge. This game remained scoreless as pitcher Keara Napoli threw a no hitter while the defense held the Lions to no runs or hits into the 5th inning.  Unfortunately, the Bears could not get anything going on offense and could only come up with two hits.  A few costly errors in the bottom of the 6th inning allowed Peachthree Ridge to score twice and take the win, 2-0.

Cambridge Bears vs. North Springs
  August 28

Traveling for the 3rd day in a row, the Cambridge Lady Bears finished off their opponents with a shutout Thursday night at North Springs High School.  The team started off strong with hits from Lauren Stewart Taylor Greene, Lily Valeo, and Keara Napoli, and giving their team a 4-0 start. In the next two innings, pitcher Keara Napoli struck out 5 out of the 6 batters, while the Bears' offense continued to get on base with a few walks by the North Springs pitcher and additional hits by Heather Kipniss, Taylor Hauber, Freshman Jensen Cheshire, Lindsey "Z" Smith, and Bela Bravo.  Pitcher Courtney Campbell went to the mound to finish off the Spartans, as she allowed no hits or runs and struck out 4 batters.  The 10-0 shutout gave the Bears another region win, putting that record to 6-0 for the season.

Coach Chip Flemmer says the team has been playing very well and competing against everyone it plays.  "The girls have seen everyone in our sub-region once, and now we prepare to face everyone for a second time.  We have played well, but we know we still have a long way to go to reach our ultimate goal."

Be sure to cheer on your Lady Bears Fastpitch team as it plays at home this week at Cambridge.  The team will play North Atlanta on Tuesday, September 2, and Forsyth Central at home, Thursday, September 4. First pitch is at 5:55 p.m.

Go Bears!!
