Bears Freshman Football Defeat Sequoyah 29-22 Thursday, Oct. 2nd

The visiting Sequoyah Chiefs got off to a quick start in the 1st quarter of the game with an early 7-0 lead.  The Bears countered with a field goal by kicker Victor Valentine to make the score 7-3 Chiefs.  At the start of the 2nd quarter, the Bears added another field goal to make the score 7-6.

The Chiefs quickly countered with a 45 yard touchdown pass from #10 (Blake Jones) to #12 (Patrick Balance).  The PAT was good to give the Chiefs a 14-6 lead.  The Bears next offensive possession showed great promise with a good passing game from QB #14 (Evan Kuykendall) to #40 (Greco Battle) and good running by #10 (Will Covington).  However, that drive was cut short by a Chiefs interception by #11 (Hakeem Hartford) to the Bears 24 yard line at the 3:11 mark of the 2nd quarter.  The 1st half ended after strong back and forth efforts offensively and defensively by both teams for a 14-6 Chiefs lead.

The Bears got off to a great start in the 3rd quarter with a huge sack by #50 (Deporess Schletty) to give the Chiefs bad field position.  This resulted in a bad snap on 4th down over the kicker's head and out of the end zone.  The safety closed to Chiefs lead to 14-8.

On the Bears next possession, #21 (Lavantay Glover) ran the ball strong on 2 plays and scored to tie the game at 14.  After the PAT, the Bears went up 15-14.  With 1 minute to go in the 3rd quarter, the Bears #14 (Evan Kuykendall) connected with #40 (Greco Battle) for a 50 yard touchdown pass. After the successful PAT, the Bears went up 22-14 to close out the 3rd quarter.

Good running by the Chiefs #34 (Cameron Gales) consumed a lot of clock and put the Chiefs deep into Bears territory.  A personal foul penalty by the Bears backed the home team up even farther.  Then the Chiefs #34 (Cameron Gales) punctuated the drive with a scamper into the end zone to cut the Bears lead to 1.  After the PAT, we had a tie game at 22 all.

An onside kick by the Chiefs was successful, but their drive stalled.  On the next Bears possession #44 (Tyler Waldo) had a long 52 yard run to the Chiefs 1 yard line and #21 (Lavantay Glover) punched it in for the touchdown. After the PAT, the Bears led 29-22 with less than 3 minutes remaining in the game.

On the Chiefs next possession, #4 (Zack Furr) intercepted a Chiefs long pass giving the ball right back to the Bears.  Another long Bears run moved the ball deep into Chiefs territory to end the game.

Final score: Bears 29, Chiefs 22.

Next up, the Freshman Bears travel to Creekview, Thursday, Oct. 9th at 6:00pm.
