The Cambridge Varsity Baseball team faced its first adversity of the young 2016 season and responded with great determination in a wild back and forth game with the visiting Lions from Peachtree Ridge, Friday, Feb. 19th.
The visitors got off to a fast start by scoring 3 runs in the first off of Bears starter Jon Hirschland, using a hit-by-pitch, single and two doubles to plate their runs. The Lions added a single run in the second to take a 4-0 lead. But in the home half of the 2nd inning Cambridge stormed back from its first deficit of the season to tie the score, all with two outs. Walks for Brett Hawkins, Cameron Moore and a hit-by-pitch for Crew Cohoes loaded the bases. Another walk for Austin Weiermiller forced in the first run of the game for Cambridge. Michael Kolesar then stepped up and blasted a shot to the RF wall to clear the bases. Unfortunately, Kolesar pulled up at first and had to come out of the game, but the Bears were back in the game at 4-4.
Peachtree Ridge went back on top in the 4th using four hits in the inning to take a 6-4 lead. The Bears tied the score back up in the bottom of the inning. Cameron Moore led off with a single and Crew Cohoes followed suit. A wild pitch scored Moore and Jacob Cabe beat out an infield hit to knock in Cohoes. Hirschland pitched a flawless 5th, which set up the heroics in the bottom of the inning when Luke Foote scored on a sacrifice fly by Crew Cohoes to take the first lead of the game for the home team. Foote had singled to lead off the inning.
Michael Viafora entered the game in the 6th inning and pitched two nearly flawless innings, striking out four Lions batters to earn the save for the 7-6 victory. Hirschland went five innings, giving up 5 earned runs and striking out five to earn his first win of the season. Offensively, Michael Kolesar led the way with 3 RBI on his clutch hit and Crew Cohoes and Cameron Moore scored 2 runs each.
The Bears stand at 2-0 on the season and play next at Dunwoody HS on Tuesday, February 23rd at 5:55 PM in another non-region game.
Go Bears!
