Cambridge Varsity Baseball Takes Down Sequoyah 6-3 in Season Opening Scrimmage

In a warm-up for the 2016 season, the Cambridge Bears sent 8 different pitchers to the hill Friday night, Feb. 12th against Sequoyah at Cambridge Field.  The result was a workmanlike 6-3 victory for the home team as the collection of pitchers combined to no-hit the visitors.  On a cold and windy night, the teams managed only a combined 4 hits as the pitchers on both sides took advantage of the elements.

It didn't look like that in the bottom of the first, however, as Austin Weiermiller, Michael Kolesar and Jacob Cabe hit absolute lasers, but right at the defense.  Things got better in the home half of the second when, after two outs, Cameron Moore knocked in Brett Hawkins and Davis Dasher (running for Luke Foote after his single) with a line drive single to right to start the scoring and put the Bears up 2-0.  The Bears pushed two more runs across in the fourth on a crazy play that saw Brett Hawkins and Sam Waylock score from first and second base respectively after a long fly out off the bat of Luke Foote.  The runners advanced home on two throwing errors by Sequoyah.

Sequoyah pushed 3 runs across in the top of the fifth without the benefit of a hit as two walks and a dropped third strike provided the base runners and two sacrifice flys provided the bulk of the offense.  Ryan Fahey came on in relief and eventually struck out Sequoyah's 3-hole hitter to end the rally.  The Bears came right back in the bottom of the fifth to push two more runs across as Bradley Wiedman hit a sacrifice fly to plate Pete Gottschalk and Crew Cohoes doubled to left to knock in Michael Kolesar to finish off the scoring.

The Bears defense was solid throughout the game playing error-free ball, but no more so than when Bradley Wiedman dove to his left on a hard ground ball at third base and made a great throw across the infield to close out the 6th and end Sequoyah's best shot for a hit.  Brett Hawkins came in to close out the game and did so with a perfect inning of work to earn the save.  Jon Mullis was credited with the win after an impressive inning of work in the second.

The Bears kick off the regular season Monday, Feb. 15th with a non-region home game against South Forsyth, followed by an away game against Centennial on Wed. Feb. 17th, and a home game vs. Peachtree Ridge Friday, Feb. 19th.

Go Bears!
