Thursday night October 24th brought out the two best teams in the Fulton and Forsyth County freshman league for a championship game. The Cambridge Bears, who have played well all season, finished with a solid win over Mays High School, 48-33.
Mays got on the scoreboard first with a touchdown and then went for the 2 point conversion, but the play was blocked by defensive back Ryan Colitz to hold them to 6 points. On the Bears drive, #5 Jakyan Love rushed 30 yards for a first down which led to a nice sequence of plays by quarterback #19 Zack Leffler with a handoff to Kaelyn Byrd for a 15 yard gain into the Mays' Red Zone. A short pass to #40 Carson Densmore put the Bears at 4th and short. The undeniable effectiveness of Byrd got the Bears to first down and goal. Then once again the ball went to Byrd who maneuvered in for a touchdown. The PAT was good to make it 7-6 Bears.
The Mays team had a couple of really athletic quarterback/receiver duos who quickly put another touchdown on the board. A really nice 70 yard kickoff return by #9 Will Britain looked to set up another quick score but on the next down, a turnover ended the drive. Fortunately the Bears defense held Mays and the Bears offense was able to score on their next drive. Again it was J. Love who rushed for about 40 yards, then running back Byrd persistently tried to get in the end zone and successfully scored a touchdown. The PAT by kicker Zack Shirk was blocked making it 14-13.
Bears determination and ability to execute with multiple plays by Byrd, a pass to Regan Beene and a QB keeper by Leffler, led to another Bear touchdown. The added 2 points from a pass to Britain, made the score 21-21 at the half.
The game continued with some strong athleticism and good offense by both teams but the Bears prevailed in this high scoring game and finished their season with a huge and exciting win.
Congratulations to the 2013 Bears Freshman Football Champions!
